Former Australia batter Mike Hussey has been appointed as a consultant coach for the 2027 Ashes and ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. He will also serve as a T20 advisor as Australia prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle, Cricket Australia announced on Friday.
Nicknamed 'Mr Cricket' during his playing days, Hussey represented Australia in 302 international matches across formats between 2005 and 2013. He was part of the Australian teams that won the 2007 ODI World Cup and completed a 5-0 Ashes whitewash in the 2006-07 home series.
Since retiring from international cricket in early 2013, the former left-hander has built an extensive coaching career spanning international cricket, the IPL and The Hundred. He was part of England's coaching staff during their 2022 T20 World Cup triumph and has served as Chennai Super Kings' long-time batting coach under Stephen Fleming. More recently, he led Welsh Fire in this year's edition of The Hundred.
“I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years,” Hussey said. “This team has achieved so much in recent times, and I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period.”
The 51-year-old will begin his new role with Australia's white-ball series against England at home this month. He has worked with the national team under head coach Andrew McDonald on short-term assignments in recent years, primarily as an additional batting consultant.
“Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players,” McDonald said. “Not only is his expertise as a player and coach across multiple formats, competitions, and countries invaluable, but so are his qualities as a person.”
